FAQs

If you have a question, post it and I'll respond. Below are some questions I frequently hear and their answers:

1. How long did you carry your twins?

37 weeks, 1 day. I went in to begin my induction two days before that.

2. Are your twins identical or fraternal?

Identical. We've known this since they were in utero because they shared a placenta.

3. What complications did you have during your pregnancy?

I had gestational diabetes, but never had to take insulin. In the final week, I also developed PUPPP and was borderline pre-eclamptic. Check out my post on PUPPP here.

4. How much weight did you gain during your pregnancy?

55 lbs. As of one week postpartum, I'd lost 25lbs of that. As of a month postpartum, I'd lost 41lbs of the weight.

5. How big were your boys at birth?

6 lbs 6 ozs and 6 lbs 7ozs

6. Did you go vaginal or c-section?

We tried vaginal and even did a trial of labor, but we ended up doing a c-section. My birth story is here, and the details of my c-section recovery are here.

7. Were your twins spontaneous or the product of fertility treatment?

Spontaneous. Hear me rant about this here. lol.

8. Do twins run in your family?

I have identical twin girl cousins on my mom's side, but research suggests that identical twins are a random occurrences and are not hereditary.

9. Did you show any signs before your miscarriage?

About a week before I miscarried I began spotting. It was light at first, and an office ultrasound a week before the loss showed a beating heart. Over the week, the bleeding got heavier and more consistent. When I started passing larger clots, I went to the ER and that's where we found out we'd lost the baby. I passed the baby about 36 hours later. The detailed story of our miscarriage can be read here.

10. How long did it take you to conceive after your miscarriage?

We waited to try until after I got my first post-miscarriage period. We miraculously got pregnant with the twins that cycle.

11. Which twin is older?

Malcolm is older by 2 minutes.

12. How long into your twin pregnancy did you work?

I worked until I was 35 weeks, 5 days.

13. Did you have to go on bed rest?

Our doctor does "modified rest" at 26 weeks with all twins. That meant I was supposed to be off of my feet with my feet up 4-6 hours a day. Basically I went to work, came home, and either got into bed or sat in the lazy boy. At 36 weeks, I was put on bed rest for the final week of my pregnancy due to elevated blood pressure.
